136: The Wild Robot Movie Review

My birthday was coming up the first week of October, and I wanted to celebrate by watching a movie with my friends. My mom looked online and discovered the movie “The Wild Robot” was released in theaters on September 27, 2024. It was a perfect movie selection for my birthday. The movie is based on the book “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown. Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy are some of the cast of the movie. The movie is 102 minutes long and is rated PG.

In the movie Roz, who is an intelligent robot, is the main character. She is stranded in the wild, and has to learn to navigate and survive among the animals. It is emotionless at the beginning, but slowly develops human-like bonding while caring for a baby goose. Roz names the baby goose Brightbill.

As a robot, Roz is programmed to complete assigned tasks. She is assigned the task of taking care of Brightbill. She needs to feed her, teach her to swim, and finally make her fly before winter. However, Roz doesn’t know how to complete these tasks. Deterministically, she figures out how to complete her tasks by making friends with the other animals around her. The main challenge is to teach Brightbill to fly and to build the endurance to fly all the way south, successfully. If Brightbill is unable to fly, its life is in danger.

Roz feels sincerely responsible for Brightbill’s life and struggles hard to train her. She uses her creativity and builds obstacle courses, and trains the goose to be capable of flying the long haul. Just before winter, the Brightbill flies south with her gaggle. Roz is left behind in the wild. Both Roz and Brightbill hoped to meet again in spring. While Roz decided to wait for Brightbill’s return, she fights against not only the harsh winter protecting the other wildlife, but also its parent company that designed it.  She finally comes out victorious with her emotional intelligence, grit, and kindness.

There are several lessons one can take from this movie. The message depends on how you perceive it in your mind. It teaches patience and perseverance when Roz learns to deal with Brightbill, kindness when Roz protects the other wildlife in spite of them not accepting her in the wild, and the power of trust, truth, and teamwork. The most powerful lesson for me was the importance of being persistent to learn and not having inhibitions to try. Roz states, “sometimes, to survive, you must become more than you were programmed to be”. I recommend the movie to audiences of all ages, who enjoy a heartwarming futuristic adventure story.
